Who we are

We are a small but ambitious Community Interest Company (social enterprise) which was created
in 2008 to give women the skills, knowledge and confidence to keep themselves safe. Freedom
Personal Safety was founded by personal safety specialists Elaine Howard and Julie Tweedale.
Since then, we have trained to work with children too and are now expanding our portfolio so that
we can reach young people, parents, lone workers and older people.

We believe that everyone has the right to enjoy their lives without violence or abuse. We work
hard to raise awareness, reduce risks and empower individuals to take control of their personal
safety. Prevention is the key to achieving this and we are committed to sharing our skills with
people in local communities, the workplace and education.

Our clients include the NHS, Lloyds Banking Group, EDF Energy, West Yorkshire Probation Trust,
Sure Start, Trafford MBC, Kirklees Young People's Service,
The Children's Society, University of
Manchester, Huddersfield University, Bolton College and many other community organisations
including schools, youth centres, women's groups and charities.

We are keen to work in partnership with other like-minded organisations and individuals to make a
difference to people's lives and we are delighted to be affiliated to
Absolute Specialists who provide
support, counselling and therapy to people who are experiencing change or dealing with trauma.

If you would like to work with us, please

Elaine Howard, Founder, Director and Instructor

"I am passionate about crime prevention and personal safety.  While
studying in Tennessee in 1993, I trained to deliver the
RAD Systems
programme for women.  I then went on to teach on a voluntary basis
with the police there.

Following my return to the UK, I embarked on a rewarding career with
the British Council specialising in change management and
communications. I always planned to bring RAD to the UK but the timing was not yet right.

After the arrival of my family, I re-trained in RAD for women (2006), adding the
radKIDS programme to
my portfolio in 2008.  I have also trained with the
Suzy Lamplugh Trust and am an Ambassador for the
Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP)Think U Know’ Campaign."

Julie Tweedale, Founder, Director and Instructor

"I know the impact violence and abuse has on people, and I am determined
to do all I can to prevent it. I trained with Elaine in the USA to become a
RAD Systems instructor. It was one of the most important events of my life
and I returned home on a mission to share what I had learnt with every
woman.

Having a family brought home the importance of helping children to keep
themselves safe and I trained to be a
radKIDS instructor in 2010, one of the
most rewarding things I have ever done."
